THE JANTE EFFECT
On Power, Exit and Collective Morality

The Norwegian government appears determined to set a new standard for fiscal irresponsibility.
From expanding government agencies to handing out questionable subsidies, they seem intent on seeing how quickly taxpayer funds can be spent. Meanwhile, every policy shift ensures the state remains the nation’s sole winner in the wealth game, while every thriving private enterprise is increasingly treated as a threat to social democracy.
Every successful private enterprise is now treated less as a partner in prosperity and more as an existential threat to social democracy
Finansfyrsten

In today’s political climate, successful entrepreneurs increasingly find themselves cast as public enemies — disliked by the public and scrutinized by the government. On the left, wealth and private achievement are often equated with inequality and injustice, fueling a narrative where innovative private businesses are portrayed as threats to social democracy. As calls grow louder for sharper taxes and stricter regulation on private success, the state positions itself as both arbiter of prosperity and principal beneficiary, leaving private wealth creators painted as obstacles rather than contributors to the common good.
JANTE

As left-leaning policies gain ground; Jante is growing skepticism toward private wealth and entrepreneurship. The man in the street immersed in redistribution rhetoric—loses sight of the real engines of growth and the vital role that private businesses play in sustaining innovation, jobs, and prosperity. In this climate, successful entrepreneurs shift from being seen as assets and contributors to society, to scapegoats for inequality and targets of political pressure.
Jante looks on, unaware that in a future shaped by leftist politics, it is he—the common citizen—who stands to lose the most.

Tom Mortensen
Ideologist & Project Initiator
Tom Mortensen is the architect behind The Jante Effect. A business professional with decades of experience in Norwegian industry, he conceived the trilogy not as an art exercise, but as a provocation — a direct response to a political climate he sees turning the Jante Law from cultural instinct into state policy.
His role is that of ideologist and mentor: identifying the narrative, shaping the argument, and translating a lived frustration with Norway’s shifting stance on wealth and entrepreneurship into a brief that demanded visual confrontation rather than polite commentary. The paintings exist because Mortensen insisted they had something urgent to say.

Diego Tirigall
Diego Tirigall works from uncomfortable territory: the place where power, official narrative, and individual responsibility intersect and clash. His work does not seek to illustrate ideas or offer closed answers, but to construct images that function as fields of tension, where symbols, text, and human figures force the viewer to take a position.
